
Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator
Reports to: Management/Supervisors
Location: Merrillville, Indiana
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $16.00 – $19.00
FLSA Status: Full-time
Responsibilities:
- Inspect equipment to make sure everything is safe and in working condition
- Unload customer vehicles
- Sort material into appropriate areas
- Inspect equipment prior to operation, fuel, and lubricate daily
- Inspect materials to quality standards
- Maintain knowledge of quality standards, material grades, what materials can/cannot be loaded
- Use all yard operating equipment, including material handler, forklifts, skid steer, baler, shear, ECT
- Perform basic maintenance on the machinery
- Load and unload inbound and outbound trucks with scrap material
- Ability to cross train on any other various equipment types
- Compliance with safety standards, which include wearing all proper personal-protective equipment while working or while in the yard
- Internal yard logistics coordination
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- 5+ years of operating experience
- Process driven and detail oriented
- Superior executive functioning skills
- Ability to maintain a clean and safe environment
- Valid driver’s license
- Knowledge of safety standards and adherence to current regulations
- Strong organizational, time management, and mathematical skills
- Ability to assess weights and judge distances and heights
- Current forklift certification per OSHA standards
- Ability to regularly sit on a powered industrial truck
- Occasionally lift and/or move objects that weigh more than 50 pounds
- Ability to work in all weather conditions
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Team player dedicated to the company
- Knowledge of scrap a plus
